COLORADO'S FRONTPAGE

Face the State

Steve Ward's stealth campaign

Tomorrow, Election Day, we will all be surprised. What we hear at the door is so different from what the polls and talking heads are reporting, there is a strong disconnect from the reality on the ground and the spin in the air.

By way of example, yesterday I walked to about 200 homes in a precinct in Castle Rock that Steve had walked earlier this summer. A very high percentage of folks -about 80% - were at home.

Of those who had voted, for every two votes for Steve, there was one vote for Armstrong, and none for Coffman or Harvey. (That trend is unusual in our walking. Generally, there will be a broader distribution of the other three, but none of the three opponents with a majority.)

Of those who hadn't voted, but plan to show up on Tuesday, 60% had already decided to vote for Steve, about 20% were supporting "someone else" and the remaining 20% were still thinking about it. We installed another five permission-based yard signs.

We hear similar results throughout the district. We'll accept that there is some bias for voters to be polite at the door, but what we hear - from Elbert, Park, Douglas, Jeffco and Arapahoe is so consistent, that we will be very surprised if Steve doesn't do very well tomorrow.
