I’m not a big fan of studies, especially when they track a trend as complex as poverty.
So pardon me if I’m a hesitant about the fallout from a recent study published by the Colorado Children’s Campaign, a group led until recently by Lieutenant Governor Barbara O’Brien. Their data show our state’s population of children living in poverty as the fastest-growing in the country. If that’s true, it’s a troubling statistic.
Some are already talking about what government can do through various social programs to alleviate the problem. But what if government itself is part of the problem?
Increased payroll and sales taxes at the state and national level affect low wage-earners the most. When parents struggle, their kids do, too. Let’s reduce the tax burden and red tape, so families can escape, not just endure, poverty.
