Cheers erupted at Colorado's mountain casinos at 12:01 am Thursday as higher limits, new table games and 24-hour gaming became reality following passage of Amendment 50 last year. Voters in Black Hawk, Cripple Creek and Central City quickly thereafter voted to exercise their new constitutional options, bringing a flavor of Las Vegas to the high country.

Colorado's mountain casinos are poised to introduce new games and higher limits overnight Wednesday. Face The State will be on the scene covering (and perhaps participating in) the festivities; watch for our story Thursday. Colorado casinos are placing their bets that the gambling rule changes going into effect at 12:01 a.m. tomorrow will put an end to their bad fortune.

Ritter's gaming veto angers mountain residents

Residents of Teller and Gilpin Counties are not happy with Gov. Bill Ritter’s first veto of the session. Nixed was Senate Bill 50, which would have required that one of the five members of the Colorado Limited Gaming Control Commission come from either of the two counties. While Ritter said the bill created the “appearance of conflict,” one local activist is calling Ritter a hypocrite.
