GOP field, led by Penry, outperforming Ritter in DBJ poll

July 23, 2009

Republican state Sen. Josh Penry is currently leading a Denver Business Journal web poll that asks readers to pick a favored candidate in next year's gubernatorial election. Penry tops incumbent Democrat Gov. Bill Ritter 42 percent to 15 percent as of Thursday afternoon in the site's weekly "Business Pulse" survey, an unscientific gauge of reader opinion.

Tidwell places his bets in GOP primaries

July 21, 2009

Lucero report - Tidwell

We've been busy pouring over second quarter campaign finance reports here in the Face the State office, and there's plenty to analyze. Generally, candidates for office are advised not to take sides in primaries, for fear of alienating supporters who may be divided on another race. But always one to challenge conventional wisdom, Republican dark horse U.S. Senate candidate Cleve Tidwell is picking favorites in primaries for U.S. House and governor.

Political newbies, veterans rub elbows at 'Liberty on the Rocks'

June 16, 2009

Ken Summers at LoTR

Face The State was on hand for Monday's west suburban meeting of Liberty on the Rocks, a growing group of activists who meet twice a month to talk all things libertarian. Joining the usual cadre of local rabble rousers were quite a few elected officials, and plenty more who fancy themselves joining their ranks.

McInnis ramps up, but can't raise or spend money without committee

June 10, 2009

Last month, Former Congressman Scott McInnis quietly filed paperwork declaring himself a candidate for Colorado Governor in 2010. Despite filing, McInnis has not set up a campaign committee with state elections officials nor created a Web site, two tasks normally a priority for new candidates. Without a committee, McInnis is prohibited under state law from accepting contributions or spending money to promote his bid for office.

Statewide candidates' personal financial disclosures

June 4, 2009

While elected officials and candidates are required under Colorado law to file personal financial disclosures with the Secretary of State, that information is not made available online. They are, however, public documents. As such, Face The State is posting this information on the Web as a public service.

State law requires those holding or seeking state office report sources of income as well as certain assets and liabilities. A major reason for requiring such disclosure is to aide the public in identifying potential conflicts of interest.
