August 26, 2009

Face The State managing editor Brad Jones will be a panelist on KBDI Channel 12's "Studio 12" program tonight at 8pm. The topic: on the one year anniversary of the Democratic National Convention convening in Denver, what are the long-term impacts? Is Colorado a player on the national scene in a way that wouldn't have been possible without the DNC? And did Denver cash in on the benefits as city leaders thought would be the case? Tune in on cable or over the air in Denver, Boulder, Colorado Springs and Pueblo.

DPD, the DNC, and the law

October 17, 2008

"It is no secret that the armies of the Denver police at the Democratic National Convention adopted a policy of intimidation towards people expressing their First Amendment rights. One cannot say that the Denver police did not telegraph their intentions, from promising to overreact during the convention to producing unacceptable t-shirts stating "We get up early to beat the crowds." This week, two cases of Denver police overreaction during the Democratic National Convention returned to the news.

DNC Dems panhandling for change

August 31, 2008

"Enough change already. Two days into their national convention in Denver, Democrats proclaimed a need for change with a passion seen only from the aggressive panhandlers staked out on the 16th Street Mall a few blocks away.

But behind all of the rhetoric of new beginnings, an aged policy platform has emerged. As eight U.S. Senate Democratic women took the stage Tuesday afternoon to present their "checklist for change," it was hard not to feel sorry for them."

Day three here at the DNC, and you can smell the excitement in the air. Then again, that may be body odor from the protesters, because from my limited experience, we can add "deodorant" to the litany of items they’re boycotting.

Pedestrians on Denver's 16th Street Mall are used to seeing police wearing paramilitary gear during the DNC, but one protest group is donning military gear and going on "patrol" downtown to call an end to the War in Iraq. Heads turned as members of Iraq Veterans Against the War shouted commands and clashed with volunteer "civilians" in staged confrontations.

Civic Center protest permits expire: Activists opt for Rock 'n Roll over rallies

A Face the State Staff Report

August 28, 2008

On midnight Tuesday, all protest permits for Civic Center Park expired to make way for Denver's annual Taste of Colorado food festival. Activists were relegated to a small patch of grass on the southwest corner of park, as well as a free speech zone closer to the convention. As of 1 p.m. Wednesday, however, there were few takers on either location.

The city's streets were relatively calm this morning as most of protesters attended a concert put on by the band Rage Against the Machine at the Denver Coliseum. When three protesters were arrested at the southwest corner of Civic Center Park, however, more than 50 officers swarmed the scene, nearly outnumbering the watchful crowd.

Spags might be right on this one...

August 27, 2008

"This morning, Denver residents, Democratic National Convention attendees, and protesters awoke to find Civic Center Park surrounded by a chain link fence. The only problem with this is that Re-create 68 already had a permit for park demonstrations today. Back in March, Glenn Spagnuolo of Re-create 68 threw a temper tantrum when they did not receive park permits for every day of the Democratic National Convention."

Fried food spotted at the DNC!

August 26, 2008

"The DNC is shaping up to be a preview of an autocratic nanny-state on steroids. Fried foods are prohibited, and meals must contain the appropriate amount of fruits and vegetables. There must be three to five different colors of food on a plate (and garnishes don't count.)

Well, folks, there has been a serious food security breach. And luckily, I'm here to break the story."

Freedom zone not all that it's cracked up to be

August 26, 2008
