State Rep. Ellen Robets, R-Durango, launched a campaign for Senate District 6 Thursday.

The district covers the southwest corner of Colorado, and Roberts already represents about half of the Senate district in the state House. SD 6 is one of the geographically largest districts in the state and covers eight counties: Archuleta, Dolores, La Plata, Montezuma, Montrose, Ouray, San Juan and San Miguel.

Senate Minority Leader Josh Penry, a Grand Junction Republican, has joined the ranks of candidates being "drafted" for election in 2010. A group of 200 supporters on Facebook want to "draft Josh Penry" to challenge Gov. Bill Ritter in 2010. To get the GOP's nomination, however, Penry may have to take on his former boss, Scott McInnis, who also has a few Facebook friends of his own.

In a nearly unanimous vote Thursday, the House adopted a resolution supporting a four-day recess that also urges legislators to forgo their per diem compensation during the break. Rep. Paul Weissman, D-Longmont, sponsored the resolution and presented it as a way for legislators to go home and work with constituents. Rural legislators, meanwhile, expressed concerns about personal finances.
