Sometimes the goal of a bill isn't to get it passed

January 29, 2009

"State Reps. Steve King, R-Grand Junction, and Laura Bradford, R-Collbran, disagreed today when she asked the House Transportation and Energy Committee to kill one of her bills.

King lamented that he was concerned it took Bradford’s use of a bill to force the governor’s office and Public Utilities Commission to sit down and consider a future for the Cameo power plant.

“I think it’s unfortunate that you basically had to waste a bill title to get the PUC, Xcel and the governor’s office to address this issue,” King said."

Everyone thinks everyone else is wasting time in the legislature

January 27, 2009

"Rep. Laura Bradford, R-Collbran, jumped into the debate, joking: “I was going to propose a bill putting all cats in plastic bags on slow-moving vehicles … with carbon monoxide detectors.”

From the left, Coloradopols has posted a thread today stating: “Republicans with seemingly no interest in doing their jobs.” The posting, which you should read in its entirety, cited Brophy’s plan, Senate Bill 74, to exempt guns manufactured in Colorado to be exempt from federal gun regulations. "

Cadman tells Bradford she crossed the line...into his parking space

"There hasn't been this much infighting among the GOP since the Beauprez-Holtzman gubernatorial match up. OK, that's an exaggeration but the parking wars at the Capitol have been fun to follow.

Sen. Bill Cadman, R-Colorado Springs, parks in space 146 on the Capitol's north side. He said he can barely get his Ford F150 in his space, thanks to Rep. Laura Bradford, R-Mesa County.

One of the few post-election bright spots for Republicans was the defeat of Rep. Bernie Buescher, D-Grand Junction. He was slated to become the next Speaker of the House but lost to political newcomer Laura Bradford by just 583 votes. Bradford heavily criticized Buescher for his support of Gov. Bill Ritter's mill levy tax increase, ruled unconstitutional in district court and now being considered by the Colorado Supreme Court.

Republicans win one: Bradford bests Buescher

November 6, 2008

"I'm not entirely displeased to see that Republican Laura Bradford beat incumbent Bernie Buescher in the Grand Junction state house race. Back in 2005, my dad and I blasted Buescher for supporting higher net taxes and for earning a zero rating from the Colorado Union of Taxpayers.

Still, Bradford barely pulled off a surprise upset in a county that went 63 percent for McCain.

In this race, as in races across Colorado and the nation, voters were faced with a choice of two evils: political force in our private lives versus political force in our economic lives.

Mesa County House Race Centers on Mill Levy Debate

A Face the State Staff Report

June 9, 2008

With a Denver district court judge’s recent ruling that a mill levy freeze amounts to an unconstitutional tax increase, Republicans are hoping the decision will bode well for GOP candidates this November who can point to the fact that all Democrat incumbent lawmakers voted in favor of the tax hike. The mill levy freeze is a particularly sensitive issue in Mesa County, where county commissioners signed on as lead plaintiffs in the lawsuit.
