We've been busy pouring over second quarter campaign finance reports here in the Face the State office, and there's plenty to analyze. Generally, candidates for office are advised not to take sides in primaries, for fear of alienating supporters who may be divided on another race. But always one to challenge conventional wisdom, Republican dark horse U.S. Senate candidate Cleve Tidwell is picking favorites in primaries for U.S. House and governor.

Lucero fundraising report short $1,620

Republican Tom Lucero's campaign for Congress under-reported its receipts for the second quarter by $1,620, according to an analysis conducted by Face The State. A filing made with the Federal Elections Commission last week, made public today, listed $14,851 in contributions and $15,799 in expenses. The campaign says that error, in addition to a number of other miscalculations, have since been corrected with an amendment submitted to the FEC Friday.

While recent media attention has focused on statewide and congressional campaigns, the University of Colorado Board of Regents is also in play, with a third of its nine seats up for grabs next year. One Republican has announced plans to run for the open 4th congressional district, while two incumbents plan to defend their seats.

Today marks the end of the 2nd quarter, and candidates for political office are scrambling to bring in last minute cash to pump up their July campaign finance reports. Among them is Tom Lucero, a CU Regent and one of two announced GOP contenders in the 4th congressional district. In an e-mail sent at 4:30 this afternoon, Lucero is getting aggressive with his fundraising, albeit a little late in the day.

CU trims $29 million in spending...but can't provide list of actual cuts

The University of Colorado Board of Regents voted to raise tuition this week without considering a local think tank's call to cut all six-figure salaries by 5 percent, a proposal that would have saved the university more than $4 million. In addition, the Regents supported $29 million in cuts, but weren't able to provide a list of actual cuts as of press time.
